Tarek Fatah speaks out about hijabs

National Post – I continue to gain respect for Tarek Fatah, the man who first posted Omar Shaban’s “F**k Canada” Facebook rants. Today in the National Post, he is questioning the need for niqabs and hijabs, and why some Muslims are trying to provoke the west needlessly.

The question we Muslims have to ask is this: What do we gain by using our daughters, sisters and wives to carry the false burden of the hijab as if it were the flag of Islam?

While I am totally opposed to the ban on the Hijab in France and Turkey, and would defend the right of a Muslim woman to wear one, I am also unwilling to give up my right to expose the political symbolism that hides behind the banner of religiosity. Most Muslims know that the Koran does not ask Muslim women explicitly to cover their heads or their faces as a fundamental practice of Islam. Yet Islamists inspired by Iran and Saudi Arabia continue to push for this attire.

What are we gaining by thumbing our noses at the host societies of the West that have allowed us to be fellow citizens? Why have we told our young women that not wearing such garments is somehow tantamount to nakedness?

Let us hope that other brave Muslims like Tarek Fatah, will stand up to the Muslim extremists in our society.

  1. Gilles in Pembroke Says:

Mr. Fatah notes the death of Neda Soltani as “Never mind the murder of Neda Agha-Soltan in Tehran, killed by fellow Muslims.” Considering all the stories not covered of Muslim on Muslim violence resulting in death, Mr. Fatah has been taken in by the poorly reported story of Neda’s death. She was actually a Christian, whose cross around her neck was cropped out of her photo which circulated in the MSM.

Mr. Fatah also writes “Already, there are protests in Egypt asking for revenge.” Which is hypocritically normal of the ever increasing radicalized intolerant society evolving in Egypt, where hundreds of Christian Copts have been brutalized, marginalized, killed, evicted, had their lively hood and churches destroyed. These are but a few of the Muslim related violence western MSMs have not reported on. By failing to report in a balanced way about ideologically based violence, western media through its’ silence on these issues are just as complicit in the collective apologist group of which Mr. Fatah says include the secular and liberal Muslims which form the majority of Europe’s Islamic community.

Mr. Fatah’s call for liberals and apologists to stand up and be counted has not been heeded in the past. It is telling that it takes a rare act of violence by a non-Muslim on a believer of Islam to make such a call to arms when the multitude of daily violence by Muslims on apostates and each other is ignored by the western press.
