Globe and Mail : Ontario’s PC party ‘a bunch of old white guys’

The Globe and Mail – It is definitely not unusual for the Globe and Mail to lend it’s support to the Liberal cause. But the article there today by Margaret Wente, is borderline racist in it’s support of the Ontario Liberal Party. It evens feels the need to take pot shots at the small towns that make up the bedrock of Ontario.

“Only a political junkie could care about the fate of Ontario’s Progressive Conservative Party – a bunch of old white guys so lost in the woods they make Stephen Harper’s crowd look enlightened.

“Ontario’s future won’t be forged in the aging, fading, small white towns like the one he grew up in. It will be forged in the vibrant knowledge belt of Southern Ontario, and in multiethnic, creative, culturally liberal Toronto.”

First of all, I would like to point out that the PC Party of Ontario is not simply made of up “old white guys”. Being a conservative in Ontario has nothing to do with the colour of your skin, but reflects certain core beliefs that anyone can hold. Would these comments be accepted if ‘white’ was substituted for any other race in an article like this?

And the fact that the author believes that small towns don’t matter, is just another example of Liberal arrogance. I wonder where the author came up with the term ‘knowledge belt’ for Southern Ontario. Does living out of this so called belt preclude you from having any knowledge? You have to wonder if the thought of leaving Southern Ontario, conjures up images of Deliverance in Margaret Wente’s mind.

This sort of language should not be tolerated in the main stream media. My only hope is that this sort of arrogance, and Toronto-centric thinking will lead to the demise of the Liberal government in the coming election.

    Miller will help with that.

Oh cut it out. You sound like some middle aged feminst hippee who has just been told that children deserve to have mommy at home. So Wente hates conservatives. Lots of women do. You’re starting to sound like one yourself.

I have no problem with Wente hating conservatives. I have a problem with a main stream newspaper printing such ridiculous drivel.

Quite funny, since Ms. Wente is always writing about her weekend home near Creemore, outside of Collingwood . Originally s much of a small-town white guy place, as any place that you could find anywhere in Ontario until the early boomers moved in with their vision of the Hamptons.
Considering the state of the Southern Ontario economy these days, it seems to be heading towards conditions in northern New York state than Silicon Valley.
